What's the most reliable method to display your phone/tablet screen on an HDTV?

I want to basically output my phone screen to an HDTV. I tried the Chromecast feature to display my screen and it worked, however there was a little lag so when viewing videos the mouth of the person speaking was slightly out of sync with the dialogue.

Rather than rely on some wireless method which is more susceptible to lag, what about using some sort of wired connection between the phone/tablet to HDMI? Has anyone tried that? How does it handle the resolution difference between your device and the TV?

I use Airplay to an AppleTV. It works great from my phone or tablet. No out of sync sound either.

For Android you need a MHL cable. For the M8 get a not Samsung one:

and the Apple dongle can be had at bestbuy:

I have an HTC One M8 which supports it, however I do not have a natively smart TV which supports such mirroring.
I think an Amazon Fire TV dongle should work. Just plug it into an HDMI port and power it up. But you need a good wifi connection. I'd download a manual first and double check but that should work.

My tablet has a HDMI port and you just need to adjust overscan. Which is stupid for a digital connection.
