helloguy, FWIW I've been a Barracuda IV fan for some time (have about six of them currently). Not a noisy one in the bunch. However, I recently picked up a Samsung SpinPoint 40GB drive link and this thing seems both quieter and faster than any of the BIV's I've had. Picked it up from Newegg for approx. $60US.

The one without power? <grin> jk

From what I've read Seagate is supposed to be the quietest. Personally I don't use Seagate's but I have read ALOT of posts and articles where people have stated/felt that Seagate was the quietest.

I wouldn't bash a manufacturer for a single drive failure. If there is a huge exodus of drives leaving their owners on an RMA crusade (as in the 60GXP 75GXP drives), then I'd take up arms. :)

I had both of my 60GXPs die within their warranty period. I would buy another Hitachi drive IF their RMA turnaround wasn't a month. :disgust:

Heh.. I have two WD 1200 SE drives. One is the quietest drive that I have in motor and seek noise over a Maxtor and a Seagate Barracuda. The Seagate has as quiet of a motor as the WD, but the WD doesn't make hardly any seek noise. The Seagate doesn't really either, but it's perceptially a little more than the WD. The other WD SE drive has this annoying high pitch ringing noise on the motor. The seek is still quiet though. I'm going to RMA that drive even though there is nothing technically wrong with the function. I can't stand the noise of it. Either that or I'll just throw it in an external enclosure with a noisy fan to drown out the noise.

helloguy, I think txxxx and beatle summed it up. As the old saying goes, "this isn't your father's Samsung!" By that I mean the current generation Samsung HD's are getting good press. And, if I was to follow your reasoning, I wouldn't have bought any Seagates, as I had a BIV crap out on me. Newegg was wonderful re RMA and the replacement drive is still humming along, as are the other BIV's I purchased.

I know a failed drive leaves one w/ a bad taste in one's mouth, but as beatle put it, don't let one bad experience jade you.
