I once read on CNN about a man with a rare condition that left him unable to move or speak at all. He could only blink. However he still had all of the sensation of touch... so he felt pain just like we do. If he had an itch there was no way to scratch it, or even ask someone to scratch it...

That would be the worst way to live...

When I was a wee lad my mum worked in nursing homes. There was this guy in one of them, he was in an accident that severely damaged his brain and spinal column. He could not communicate, but his eyes would open and he could almost track you. He couldn't move anything at all, just blink, and he had machines breathing and eating for him. He would also occasionally sort of shudder his eyes almost seizure like. The docs say he was fully aware and that it was like he was driving this giant robot of a body, with no way to control anything. He was likely screaming inside his head and the only thing coming out was the eye shuddering. His doc says he could not feel any pain though, so theres that, but still. I think this is the worst possible way to live. His family kept him alive because they felt that pulling the plug was murder. It cost a ten thousand a month to keep him going.
