The invention of Intel's 4004 4-bit processor in 1971. That was the beginning of all modern computers. It had a whopping 2,300 transitors, and could only do 60,000 operations per second:shocked:.

I'm going to go with "written language". As amazing and helpful as microcircuitry has been, I don't think it can claim the all time crown.
