This album: N.E.R.D. - In Search Of...

The instrumentals and vocals are good for testing out sound quality. Especially the track "Tape You".

Just listened to the OC Remix version of FF3 Terra In Black. Very good.

I'm not sure really what the most "gorgeous" piece of music i've ever heard is, but a few come to mind from various genres. Very few songs have that hypontic effect on me. Mostly classical/instrumental/trance

There's a CD called "Angel's Kiss" that's pretty hard to find but has almost an ethereal quality to it. Purely instrumental. It's like listening to enya on crack. Infinitely better.

Also like:

Moonlight Sonata
Theme from DeBeers Diamond Commercial (it's probably a real song but dont know the name)
DJ Mystik's trance remix of "unchained melody"
Unknown Mp3 only known as "Matrix Trance Mix"
DJ Dado's X Files trance remix
OC Remix's "Seaside Lullaby" from Zelda: Link's Awakening
OC Remix's "Death of a Legend" from the original Ninja Gaiden
OC Remix's "Devil's Mask" from the original Ninja Gaiden
Braveheart song & trance remix version

Klipsch 5.1 Promedia Ultra/ Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound card/ Foobar with Kernel Streaming enabled.
The sound is unreal. Literally.

Nice placebo effect you got there with your kernel streaming ;)

It turns out, as someone suggested, that I don't have Kernel Streaming enabled. I have resampling enabled in slow mode at 96000 hz. That accounts for the processor usage and expanded range.
The sound is more "full". It's hard to describe. It's like the sound goes from old and washed out to new and spring-like.
The difference is not apparent with older recordings. It only seems to stand out with more recent recordings. I'm guessing it's the difference between the songs being recorded digitally or with analog?

Opeth's "Lamentations" DVD - hands down one of the best live recordings I've ever heard... lord help me the next time I go audition a set of speakers, 'cause I don't think I'll be able to control my wallet... :D

it's also on my favourite CD of all time. I still have a wall-sized poster around here somewhere.

no, no. click the "up" button on your player once. THEN you've got the most piece of music ever. cranking "rocket" on vinyl through my HD-580's, the low end is so incredible that it literally makes my jaw spasm. when he does the queen-ripoff riff at the end, i need diapers.

Hey, you know it. Tough to pick one from that album. A couple honourable mentions for me:

Etta James - At Last (it's our wedding song)
Tragically Hip - Wheat Kings
Chris Cornell - Sunshower

I need to get cultured and listen to some classical, I know. It's on the agenda, as is reading a few classics.

Too lazy to read them all, but if no one has mentioned it,
try to find the soundtrack to Carmina Burana.(sp?)

The first and last sections mostly are just amazing, and while hard to explain,
I would be willing to bet nearly everyone has heard it. (O Fortuna)

I don't think I've ever been brought to tears by music, but one piece in particular has certainly managed to send shivers down my spine: Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 578. Composed by JS Bach, and performed by Helmut Walcha. I recommend turning the volume way up, or you'll miss the subtlties of the rather brash organ. And to the people who have mentioned "The Moonlight Sonata", you should also check out Beethovens "Pathétique", in particular the second movement, Adagio cantabile. I listen to a recording by Glenn Gould, but I'm sure there are other great recordings out there for you to choose from...
