Im getting a new HDD, the WD 80GB SE. Im wondering how big I should make the OS partition? After time Im sure as install files are added to the system directory the space it takes up will grow and the recycle bin will add too. Im thinking maybe 10gb? Is that toomuch? Will I ever run outa room on that partition?

If you plan on adding applications on the C drive I would go with 12 or 15 Gig, osmewhere around there. I think XP, patched is around 4 Gigs with everything possible installed from Windows XP Pro.

Minimum is I belive around 1.5 GB free....i would go with MedicBob's 12-15 gig advice though, it will give your OS headroom to grow as well...think about future patches and service packs etc.

Hi,

If you go to the microsoft site to look up system requirements you'll see this

1.5GB minimum recommended, so double that for sure (if you just want the OS only). If you want "Program Files" as well then you'll need to calculate the additional space from your inital needs (then probably double it also).

Obviously you can't buy a 3 GB HD nowadays, so any new HD/stroke partition over 3GB (more if "Program Files as well) will do it.

Good luck,

Andy

I've been using 10 GB on four computers for OS and apps and maintain an average 6.5 GB free all the time. I like this number and have grown comfortable with the 10,244 MB partitions. It's a nice round number when using two identical hard drives. BTW, I don't have any games, but I've got the room when I do.

I'd use 8GB-10GB, any more will be kinda wasted if your not installing thing to C
