New most depressing song, Aphex Twin - At the Heart of It All. NIN's cover of it was almost identical but his original was more creative I guess. That song goes to roots of emotion.

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (Gordon Lightfoot?)
"Wildfire"
"Seasons in the Sun"
"I Drink Alone" (George Thorogood)

I drink alone, yeah,
with nobody else
I drink alone, yeah,
with nobody else
You know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

Every morning just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser,
that's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

The other night I laid sleeping,
and I woke from a terrible dream
So I caught up my pal Jack Daniel's,
and his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

The other day I got invited to a party,
but I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker,
and his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

My whole family done give up on me,
and it makes me feel oh so bad
The only one who will hang out with me,
is my dear old granddad
And we drink alone, yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone,
I prefer to be by myself

Damn--That is depressing . . .

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth ( the whole album )

I guess its just because I listenend to that album over and over again during a really rough time of my life...but now every time I listen to it, it feels like everythings happening all over again.

Paradise Lost - Believe in nothing is pretty depressing too.

I can think of plenty, but this one comes to mind - When She Loved Me - Sarah McLachlan. It was on the Toy Story 2 ST

hehe... when I was 16, I worked at a place in Park City called the Claimjumper steakhouse. Michael Stipes came in and started playing on one of the pianos during the film festival, and the bartender went over and asked him to stop playing! the moron had no clue WTF he was talking to. Stipes quietly got off the piano bench and left the restaurant. The bartender was fired later.

"Invisible Moment"
By John Frusciante

Extra time when you think it's over
Live a life when you've rolled over and died
I don't feel pain
I don't travel this line
Levitate and feel the ground get closer
Ecstasy made every step a mile
When it becomes a waste
Why hold on for dear life
Wide pain in the blue white break up
All paths divide
Life has a way of opening up
All names travel with their owner
Tho' they've no space, they move all around
I see invisible moment in every town
Every cry is a separate emotion
Happenings are planned
And then they arrive
They go on with or without you there

The Rat who would be King - Matthew Good Band.

One of the saddest songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while
Once you're in you're pretty much fu*ked
When I was the rat
The rat who would be king
I imagined typhoid and us alone
Always us alone
And I've waited on the sidelines all this time
And I've a grenade
With our names scratched on the side
But that's love
And you know that love's not enough

Crawl from the sea
Wait for some thumbs
A greatness to breed
Build the mall of America
When I was rat
The rat would be king
I imagined ashes and us alone
Always us alone
And I've waited on the sidelines all this time
And I've a grenade
With our names scratched on the side
But that's just love
And you know that love's not enough

You really need the music to really experience it.

@SONG: something i can never have.
NIN
i still recall the taste of my tears.
echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
my favorite dreams of you still wash ashore.
scraping through my head 'till i don't want to sleep anymore.

Chorus: come on tell me.
make this all go away.
you make this all go away.
i'm down to just one thing.
and i'm starting to scare myself.
make this all go away.
you make this all go way.

i just want something.
i just want something i can never have

you always were the one to show me how
back then i couldn't do the things that i can't do now.
this thing is slowly take me apart.
grey would be the color if i had a heart.

i just want something i can never have

in this place it seems like such a shame.
though it all looks different now,
i know it's still the same
everywhere i look you're all i see.
just a fadingfuckingreminder of who i used to be.

Chorus

i just want something.

i just want something i can never have

i just want something i can never have

think i know what you meant.
that night on my bed.
still picking at this scab

i wish you were dead.

you sweat and perry ellis.
just stains on my sheets.

I can't believe Stabbing Westward hasn't been brought up so far. All of their albums besides the latest one are all pretty depressing.

"Beloved Wife" by Natalie Merchant (off her Tigerlily cd) is another one, it talks about a man who just lost his wife of many years...

You were the love
for certain of my life
you were simply my beloved wife
I don't know for certain
how I'll live my life
now alone without my beloved wife
my beloved wife

I can't believe
I've lost the very best of me

you were the love
for certain of my life
you were simply my beloved wife
I don't know for certain
how I'll live my life
now alone without my beloved wife
my beloved wife

I can't believe
I've lost the very best of me

you were the love
for certain of my life
for 50 years simply my beloved wife
with another love I'll never lye again
it's you I can't deny
it's you I can't defy
a depth so deep
into my grief
without my beloved soul
I renounce my life
as my right
now alone without my beloved wife
my beloved wife

my beloved wife
my love is gone she suffered long
in hours of pain
my love is gone
now my suffering begins
my love is gone
would it be wrong if I should
surrender all the joy in my life
go with her tonight?

my love is gone she suffered long
in hours of pain
my love is gone
would it be wrong if I should
just turn my face away from the light
go with her tonight?
