Beta 1 - 2296, but im sure the weekly builds are far beyond that now :)

Im running Beta 1 Pro right now, and i must say that i am in love with it. I only have a couple of minor niggles with it. I do have one problem where i will lose sound, and then the OS itself locks up, but it only happens after days of uptime and seems to be quite random - i think its related to ICQ and/or cuteftp cause thats all im ever running when it happens. Then again, it could be the SB Live! drivers, cause i put liveware 3 on, then took it off cause it wasnt 100%:) Havent had a single game/prog crash though, which is pretty impressive for Beta 1.

As far as i know, all except Personal will support SMP.

PS - Im buying more ram tomorrow cause 128MB is a little tight, shes bursting at the seams :)

did you do a clean install or did you upgrade from win2k? I am currently using win2k and have come across Beta 1. I have heard good things about Whistler so I want to install it. Is whistler crash prone and is it any quicker than win2k.

My setup is a bp6 w dual celly 561's and 256megs ram..

You can upgrade from win2K. In the whistler CD, you should see a 'read me' file that discusses the compatibility and installation issues. In terms of speed, I can't really tell (noticeably) which one is faster. However, "empty trash" is much quicker in whistler than in win2k.

I clean installed, as im now dual booting with 98SE. Didnt have win2k on the system as i tried it when it came out and didnt like it that much cause it was a bit of a hog/crap for the games i played. However, ive had a complete change of heart with Whistler - its here to stay and in a few weeks the phrase "Win 98 has LEFT the building.." comes to mind :) Might wait till Beta 2 comes out though, cause it will neccesatate a reinstall and so i may as well do it all in a one'r.

As for stability, i did point out that it seems to have somthing niggling at it which can bring it down, but ive not heard other complain about this so it could just be somit that im runnning, and/or a driver issue. I cant really compare to win2k, cause i didnt leave my machine on 24/7 back then, whereas i do now. Win98 was actually pretty stable for me and usually lasted a couple of days before *I* rebooted it cause of its sh*t memory management:) However, despite my little lockup problem, i usually get a few days out of it and once had it up for 5 days - helluva respectable for Beta 1 in my opinion. Now, just gotta get some more RAM - i waited, and its dropped another £6, but now is the time to act:)

All in all, i have to say, Way to go M$. Dual boot if you have to, but get it slapped on there now, im sure she will purr like a kitten on your machine.
