Ok, sound that used to work on my system now does not, and I think(hope) it's a software issue. Instead of reformatting my main 120GB drive, I just want to unhook it and install on my 8GB drive to see if that fixes the problem.

Will that be enough room for just the OS? And would it even let me install XP since its already liscenced?

yes 8gb will be enough room for just the OS. if you are just installing this as a test then you can install it and not activate it. also, I'm not sure how many times MS lets you install and activate without having to call them but it must be a bunch because I put together a computer recently and I installed and activated XP, had some software issues reinstalled and activated XP, then had motherboard issues, replaced the motherboard reinstalled and activated XP all during a week period and I had not problems with the activation.

8 gb is perfectly enough. I think HP home with minimum install will take no more than 2.5 gb. Allow 500mb for swap file and ur set.
