I was just wondering whats the minimum watts a person should buy these days for a PSU? what good brand names should one look for?

I am planning on upgrading my computer in the future so what power supply would be future proof and quality made?

340 sounds decent but....

"Power Supply: Shine Horner 340 watt psu"

shine horner? what is that like a KIA in PSU? or is it a skyline?

Hyundai at best.

i was shocked when i found this out, but i had an HP with 1.3Ghz T-Bird 2 cd drives a 60GB 7200RPM HDD, 512MB RAM, GF4 MX 420 64 PCI, SB Audigy..... on a 150WATT PSU...never had a prob....but couldnt run two HDD...i tried it would detect the slave

I have no problems with my 250w PS... It runs my P4-2.8/9700 PRO/2 HD's/DVD/CD-RW/etc rig just fine. 🙂

(It's about the quality more than the quantity.)

Right on!! I have a 300watt (not a major brand) running a 1.73ghz amd @ 2.083ghz with 3 drives, shuttle mobo with onboard, vid, sound, lan, 2 case fans, several usb devices.....

a good quality 300W should be fine

look at what an antec 300W smart power runs:

8rda+
4 fans
1700+ @ 2200 mhz
512 pc3200
DVD burner
CDRW
80 GB WD SE
9700 pro
TBSC

I had a Shuttle SB51G with a 200W PSU running a 2.4B, GF4 4400, 512MB PC2700, 2 WD Special Edition HDDs (80 and 120), DVD-ROM, Logitech Elite MX Duo, and a wireless PCI card... not to mention sound and various peripherals connected to the USB/Firewire slots. It was pretty amazing, since I had a link to a site that would tell you how many watts you'd need to run your system (I lost the link) and it said something like 340W... all about quality.

It's not about the "wattage" rating.. You need to look at what each rail is rated for in amps. Take a good Antec true 330, the +5 volt rail is rated at 30A and the 3.3V is at 28A. Now look at the Antec Solution series 300, the 3.3V rail drops to 20A. The 3.3V rail is the one that supplies the power for the CPU and Ram.

Well... I think 1w would be the bare minimum... That's for like a uh.. um...

Anyway. I am running a TrueBlue 480..I love this baby 😀

Same here, loved the true blue, a no brand 300w psu just went dead on me by causing the pc to restart randomly, now with a true blue, I am running like a gazzilion of fans with cold cathodes, and true blue 480 doesn;t break a sweat...

Judging how well my 300 watt Allied did on my older pc, I say your more than fine.

I had a 1800+ and Gf4 running very smoothly with the generic 300 watt psu.

Now I have a True Power 430 watt for sheits and giggles with over kill to spare.

I had a generic 250 watt PSU which ran my old Athlon 1.4 just grand until it exploded in a puff of smoke just when I needed it most (i.e. in the middle of my university dissertation!).

Nowadays I wouldn't recommend anything other than a high quality 300+ watt PSU (i.e. Antec).

lol, sorry. That is true also. It could be running steady however you could be putting a lot of strain on a PSU not meant to handle it.
