I just moved into a new place and needed to pick up a sofa set. I found this set (full sized sofa + chair) ranging from $799 to $1,448. In fact, the place I bought it from was selling it for $1,200 but I price matched them to $799 delivered. What's the deal? There's no way they would take a loss on something so is it normal for companies to have such a huge markup on furniture?

My brother works at a furniture store. Employee discount on new merchandise is 40% off of sale price.

And they're probably making 10-20% off of their employees... Ouch, how is that legal? I know, i know, free market and such.. But electronic products, for example, have MSRPs. Why doesn't the furniture industry have some guidelines to prevent people from getting ripped off? Also, is there any place (website, etc.) that sells furniture closer to cost? I still need a dining room set...

People should sell it for whatever. Stores have their own costs, and they have to make thier own profits. Not like people buy new furniture every week.

But yea, theres a huge markup on that, but it sounds like you are shopping around and getting it cheap.

Furniture stores have a lot of overhead costs. The items are bulky, people need personalized help because they dunno what they are doing, huge showrooms, etc. Think about how many different types of mattresses there are, then remember that each model probably goes from single to california king, and each probably has five levels of firmness. Thats a lot of stock to carry.
