What's the longest you've spent on a school assignment?

So far this one is killing me.

I think I am nearing the 35-40 hour mark, but I don't know anymore. I now have 3400 lines of code, and
my implementation still isn't finished. I really find this project interesting and a lot of fun to code, but the
time commitment is too much! My other courses are suffering tremendously. I would guess that 70% of
my school work focus is on this class. What annoys me the most is that I'm not even learning much about
the material! So far I've learned more about how to write a file parser, and OOP techniques. Oh well, this
semester will be over in a month.

My progress as of yesterday

An entire semester for a research paper on the Chinese Cultural Revolution Red Guards. For smaller projects I remember spending a few days writing and debugging Java proggies.

My group spent 4 days working on one math problem before... sucked.

And I've spent 2 weeks working on a programming assignment before.

I don't know, about 5 hours. But I have a feeling that my next project for my Religion in America class is going to take up longer than that.

It's not one assignment, but me and a bunch of others in my class did the entire semester's worth of work in the last couple of days of the year before we all graduated 😀

I don't think I have worked 40 hours on a single program @ work, let alone school.

Work and school is different... when at work, you usually know what you are doing 😉

Not exactly one assignment but when I was in the Cisco Network Academy for CCNP it was about 4 hours of scheduled class time per week and also about 20 hours per week on labs.

This lasted for about 40 weeks.

I spent 16 hours straight doing a summary of WWII for my grade 12 history class. It ended up being almost 20 000 words. 98% on it too 🙂

i wrote an optimizing compiler that took my partner and I 40 hours a week for 6 months, my parents, firends, family hated me by the end of the assignment.

silverpig, dang! I can't get good grades on papers... I got 96% on my first assignment for this class, and the average grade
was 55% so that's what's keeping me going for this one.

Ameesh, people are annoyed at me enough already! Couldn't imagine working that hard on one project for 6 months!
Although compiler optimization is an interesting area of study.

9 months............ a high school science project. It was a group project about terraforming Mars. We discussed travel to Mars, the different ecosystems and stuff like that. We had to do a presentation in front of all 8 science classes and the report was 500+/- pages long. It was actually pretty fun 😀

I take it that graduate school is pretty much one big project then? I would be fine with that as long as I don't have
other courses that I should be spending some time working on...

No, you still take courses but then you also have a project or thesis on the side.

Yeah, but you don't take all that many courses compared to undergrads. From what I've heard, as long as you pick a thesis or project you are interested in, it's not bad at all since classes take up a lot less time than as an undergrad.

Oh, and for my part, I don't know exactly, but this "design a processor" project I have in one of my classes has been eating up a ton of time lately. But I'd probably say my record is 40 hours or so for a project last year. Not too bad, and we planned it well, so no rush.

Also, at least in my program, you only take classes for your first two years. The rest of the time is spent on research and teaching.
