Spent a little too much time out in the sun last Sunday without sunscreen and got FRIED. It's now Thursday and I still can't comfortably wear a shirt. My skin feels like a dried out peice of leather, and I'm still colored a nice fuscia color.

What's the longest you've paid for your stupidity? :p

Oh...know any way to speed up the recovery process?

1 day. ;)

I'm lucky enough to have relatively dark skin.

As long as it's not blistered, rub some Vitamin E lotion on it.

I went to San Jose once and got burned so bad. It took a couple days for the pain to go away but it took even longer to recover because my skin started to peel. agh

If you are still feeling the heat from the burn, make a paste of baking soda and water then cover the area with it. It will take the heat out of the burn, when the baking soda paste has dried out wash it off and cover the area with a moisturiser.
(Baking soda can cure most ailments, its wonderful stuff)

A week and a half. Whne I lived in Panama, I was out on the beach, and you could rent little bohios w/ hammocks. Well, I fell asleep in one of the hammocks for 4 hours. When I got up, I was as red as a beet. Then (here comes the gross part) my skin all bubbled with HUGE blisters up on my back. It hurt so bad the I couldn't wear a shirt and I had to sleep in a sitting position. I went to the base doctor about it, and he said that my back was covered in second degree burns. Well, around day 6, my little sister pushed on my back and my skin ripped off. Then, from that point on it started to heal. Now my back is covered in tons of freckles.

That my gross little story.

Oh, also, I have to get checked for skin cancer ever 6 months because I;m at high risk.

Yea, a week and a half sounds right...I spent a couple of weeks on The Island of Capri...fresh from the True North,... my poor virgin skin.

Maybe a week or two.

Several years ago I did something stupid. I laid out for several hours with no sunscreen. And I am white as can be. I ended up needing to see a doctor. I was lying in bed all covered up and shivering that night. My knees swelled up for some reason too. I missed several days of work.

When I did peel, my whole body peeled. Well, except the swim trunks area. And when I peeled it was real wierd. My skin sort of bubbled, and the bubbles had water in them. When I picked the skin off, I had to deal with these water pockets. Strange.

At the time, I just had a job in a deli and I helped with some caterings. The day I went back to work, I had to help with an outdoor catering. We had big propane grills that we pulled behind our vans. We had to cook several hunderd burgers that day. And yes, it was hot and sunny. The heat actually made me shiver. I shivered the whole time. Naturally, I didn't feel very good, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

I'll never again worry about how tan my skin looks. My pain free white skin is just fine.

Hmmm...baking soda paste. Haven't heard of that, I'll have to try it. Thanks! I took a bath in vinegar water because it's supposed to "take out the heat" as well. Other than that, I've been putting on a water based aloe jell that has a pain relieving analgesic in it. Feels nice for about 3 hours...then starts to wear off :( Takes forever for that stuff to dry though, so I can't reapply at work.

I had a couple blisters but the g/f drained those last night and put some antibiotics on it.

vi_edit - I burn easily so I have used it a couple of times, and the relief is immediate.

one night. That was when I was swimming for 3 hours straight without sun block. The next day it was just hella itchy. Kinda fun to scratch and see all your skins flake off ;p

One time when we were on vacation in Hawaii, the first day there I fell asleep on the beach face down, no shirt, no suncreen. I'm fair complected, so needless to say I got burnt to a crisp. We're talking from off the plane at like Noon, to burnt to a crisp by 4:00 PM. Let me tell you, that is NOT a way to start a two week vacation in Hawaii. For the first week I was miserable and peeling like crazy.

I don't remember how long it lasted, but it as bad. I spent the day building a sand city with my brother, and, though I'd put on sunblock, it didn't hold up.

I'm fair-skinned, so I burn, never tan.

My entire back was burned, blistered, watery, and burnt to a crisp.

I got crispified in a whopping 3.5 hours of exposure. Of course, I was drunk as a skunk, having a good old time in a paddle boat out on a lake, so I was rather oblivious to my condition

Total of about a month recovery time for my worst burn. Out for about 6-7 hours without sunscreen since it washed off in the ocean and I didnt realize it. Entire back covered with bigass water filled blisters etc. Took about 4-5 weeks total to heal entirely.

Are you still hurting? ;)

In our defense, the UV index was 9-10 (fairly high), so it was relatively easy to burn.

I felt liek I was like 199 degrees for about 1 week.. then I pealed and th enew skin was very sensitive to everything. I think that was really the only time I have ever been truly burnt.. I even got blisters come up. It brought tears to my eyes to put my shoes on..

Well once when I was 7 I went to Florida for vacation and after 2 days of straight sun, with little sunscreen, I had blisters the size of quarters. Needless to say I didn't sleep for 3 days, and after a week I still didn't goto school, ouch that hurt. Now that I live in Hawaii I get minor burns every so often, I guess sitting in front of a computer doesn't help get my skin dark, hehe. Aloe solarcane stuff or aloe from a bottle, from Bannanna Boat I think, really helps. Lots of water helps too.

I got absolutely fried about 7 years ago while on vacation in Florida. It lasted about a week and a half.
My most unpleasant experience was going night fishing a couple of days after the burn. The combination of the sea mist, sand and salt caused the most AGONIZING BURNING ITCH known to mankind...which increased ten-fold when I tried to scratch my lobster-red skin (thus rubbing salt in the wound so to speak). It was so horrible I almost cried like a girl!

After reading this thread, there is no doubt in my mind why there are so many cases of skin cancer treated every year.

I shaved my head.....well my roommate shaved my head. After that we decided I needed to hit the tanning bed. I hadnt been in a tanning bed for years. He said that the new tanning salon had these new beds that take 1/3 the time! He went to those and they were awesome. Ok...I'll go. I get down there and there is a new girl working. I told her I wanted to try the "new" beds. She is like "ok....here is some oil "coconut oil" to put on before you get in there". She said "I will set it for 20 minutes, come out when you are done". I thought to myself, hmmmm, thought these were faster beds? Oh well, she works here, I will listen to her. Needless to say, 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 99% of my body. Two trips to the emergency room, two weeks out of work, 6 quarts of Aloe, $1200 worth of silvadene, 10 days of jaw shaking pain, it was over. That might of been the two most miserable weeks of my life. So much for trusting people because they work there. Apparently it was her second day. After fighting with them and threatening with a law suit. They paid my bills and paid me for my two weeks off work.
