This post is not going to garner any good responses. It's either going to get the two different sides saying their side is great and the other is horrible, or people in the middle saying both sides are terrible.

Very generally though, left = Democrat and right = Republican.

Since bluedog democrats are often to the right of more liberal republicans, there is a certain overlap.

But if we want to look at democrats as favoring big government and republicans as favoring a smaller government, we may be getting closer to the traditional differences between parties.

But IMHO, the real reason is that the GOP distrusts any governmental regulation of business, and GWB&co were quite successful at dismantling over a century's worth of regulations. And we saw business basically going wild, letting their own greed get ahead of their own self interests, and it damn near melted down the entire banking system and the world's economy. And we have still only addressed a part of the bail outs that could be still needed unless we demand the bankers pay for their own screw ups.

Basically saying to me, that a balanced approach is needed, we can't get too far left or too far right or there is always hell to pay.
Obama may seem over liberal to some, but we have been drifting too far right for too many years, and must move quite a distance to the left to restore the balance. As it is we have transferred too much of the tax burden to the middle class and the poor resulting in too much wealth transfer to only the very very rich, thereby leaving the lower part of the food chain with too little spending power to sustain the American economy.

Sadly our self inflicted wounds are very deep, and all roads may lead to ruin.

Well I think the classic definition is that the left are usually more "progressive" they want change and new things now. The right, aka conservatives are about slow change and little govt intervention to get things done. Although now the political spectrum is vastly more complex then that.
the Right and left are really pretty loose terms though, often on the forum people just call each over dirty lefties or righties if they don't agree with some opinion they have, this indicates that they have some bias or something. The left/right political spectrum indicates a 1D way of thinking about politics when it really needs to be 2D. You can be Conservative or Liberal about Social issues (Abortion, gay marriage, labor laws/unions, etc) and Conservative or Liberal about financial issues i.e what we should spend money on and how much. Think of like an X,Y corridnate plane. Now i used to know some site that would ask you political questions and graph you on there, perhaps someone else knows.

Title: what's the "left" and what's the "right"

A generalization and stereotyping of a very broad and diverse people. Marginalized to fit the drum beat of their leaders. Quite effective too.

I'm sure the Wikipedia article is great and I also agree that the spectrum not linear. I think an x/y chart is more useful ultimately forming a diamond. One axis is social liberty and the other is financial liberty. Ultimately what you get are four options: 1) social conservative fiscally liberal (Bush and some other Republicans despite his claim to fiscal conservatism) 2) social conservative fiscal conservative (average Republican voter) 3) social liberal fiscal conservative (Libertarian) 4) social liberal fiscal liberal (average Dem voter)

The funny thing is that many people whom you'd call "right" kept it clean and civil. Then you chime in and start the insults... with Phokus in tow.

Color me surprised :)

Is there an axis for how much you believe in the resurrection of Christ and the Ron Paul Revolution?

That tends to happen when racists use racial slurs like you did.
