I see the official website shows 1.3.1 as the official version, but I keep seeing google links to versions that are way higher than this like 1.8.1 and 1.8.2. WTF? I can only buy 1.3.1. Oh yeah...this is for my mom lol...is it pretty simple when you figure it out?

Thanks yallz

Last time I checked (about a week ago) it's 1.3.1. You might be seeing links for *Classic* Minecraft which is *free* and no longer really supported.

I recall downloading a hack file of *Classic* Minecraft (again since it technically isn't *free* outside of playing in a browser) that was soemthing like version 1.6.1.

And now I need to go slap my girlfriend because I know the answer to this question.

The Minecraft beta went up to 1.8.1, which is probably what you're seeing. Why they didn't go with a number system like 0.8.1 for beta is being me.

From what I remember the beta followed its own 1.x version numbers than when it came out of beta they went back to 1.0. So for example, 1.3.1 release would be newer than 1.8 beta.

For all those that didnt understand him, I fixed it up.

And now to retort.

A) Don't post in a thread unless you have something useful to say. This wasn't a thread based on how good minecraft is, but just a question about it. (OP it is 1.3.1, the beta 1.8.1 is FAR behind the released version, as they were out before the release of the game)

B) All games can be considered work, it is a personal opinion what people find fun. If our opinions mattered, I would say Call of Duty series is dull and boring, nothing ever changes in it. So much so that it reminds me of my time spent at work, therefore it is the worst game series ever made.

Yea 1.3 something or other is latest version.
The 1.8 something version is beta, which had less content, but ran quite well.

It can be fun to play with, especially if you build stuff together with friends or family.

Now to the obligatory "Is it worth it?" question. I've dabbled in beta but never really got into it, mostly because i hate playing games through flash. I'm not going to ask if buying the game is worth it, because Minecraft fans are just going to answer in the affirmative. What I will ask is...is there anything in the official release that would make an immediate positive impression on me compared to the beta, or was 5 minutes playing beta in a java window actually adequate in judging the game "not for me"?

I've been on the fence about buying it, but I can't seem to find any sort of urgency to pull the trigger. It's not about the money, just interest.

The game in Flash was a VERY early version of the game and not that much like the current version. While the game is quite fun to start with, I find it boring now that I have done everything I really wanted to. (Mostly all the cool buildings and castles I have built have no real practical use in the game now. Being an engineer, it would be better if my constructiins had more practical use to the game mechanics. I do have a nice maze, village, and roller coaster that I built that I still like to play with once in a while.)

You can't run the Betas without paying for Minecraft. With 1.3.1 they added a demo mode however. I have not used it but if you download the launcher off their site and attempt to login without an account it allows you to test the game. The "free" version was almmost like a tech demo of the current "creative" mode which has no monsters and no gathering of resources.

EDIT: I just tested the demo for you, it allows you to play for ~1 hour and 40 minutes before you are forced to wipe and restart. It's full except for that so I would say give it a shot and test if you enjoy the game.

I think it is worth the 20 or whatever dollars they a charging. I picked it up when it had its first official release and was really glued to the game at first, but my interest starting dropping when I realized that it lacks a solid core & depth of a game and is primarily just about building stuff. It relies heavily on the Minecraft community, the maps/mods can be a real hit & miss but it is pretty easy to find the good stuff.

Mojang has also gotten steadily more and more lazy (at least on the pc side), updates are now taking much longer to come out.

I believe the pre-release of 1.3.2 (same as 1.3.1, I believe, with some bug fixes) is already available. The official release of 1.3.2 is tomorrow/Thursday (I think). The pre-release is the same as the official release though, content wise.
