whats the latest free antivirus tool that everybody uses

I think they just kind of hide it on their website now...but I'm still using free. I believe the direct address is free.grisoft.com or something like that.

Yeah, free.grisoft.com looks like it still works. Its been like this for a couple years I think. You go to the main site and its like the free product doesn't exist, but if you go to that address you should be able to get it.

I just bought Kaspersky which is good for three years as well as three users. It is excellent and I really like their software.

I used to use avast but have now switched to the free version antivir for its better detection rate. But it should be noted that the free version of antivir does not prescan incoming
emails. In my case it does not matter because another computer on my network catches the emails. And if I were to pay for an antivirus, I would probably go Kaspersky.

I did try the free AOL Kaspersky but it sadly slowed our network to a crawl. And on my wife's computer that catches email, its still avast. But as a tail ender on a network, avast
automatic updates stopped working and antivir auto updates work fine.

How reliable is this Virus.gr report?

I would advise against assuming "Oh, I have product such-and-such, therefore I am immune to XX.xx% of malware because this report says so." What matters in preventing infection is detection of the malware the bad guys are using RIGHT NOW. My observations suggest the average "right-now" detection rate of major-brand antivirus software is nowhere near the numbers in that report: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=76&threadid=2084972 That thread covers just one run; I do this on-again, off-again, sometimes daily when I have the stamina for it, and that's the bottom line: security software is not a panacea. Use other layers of security too, including risk avoidance, security updates, and least-privilege principles.

If you want to do some real-world investigation in order to form your own conclusions, I can PM a suggested approach.

I would not recommend it. With all due respect to the people here and their IT skills, doing a proper malware test is very very difficult. It involves a special set of skills and knowledge not generally possessed by even most "security experts" , much less the average IT pro.

Yes, you will definitely get a result, but the methodology is likely to be full of flaws, and the results you get will even be more meaningless.

I would also add that comparing say mechbgon's test and the one in this thread is obviously comparing apples to pears.

Thanks mechBgon, I'm pretty experienced, no worries.

Ahh btw didn't notice you, long time no see... 🙂

I've been wanting to check out GDATA's AV 2008 heard some good things.

Also looks like AntiVir has been a pretty good job too.

ALOHA
