I have the same question. On www.aximsite.com people in the forums have mentioned using 4GB and even 6GB Hitachi microdrives. It does have an effect on how long the battery lasts. To reduce battery usage when listening to music you can increase the cache size so an entire song fits into the cache and the drive doesn't have to constantly spin.
Is 6GB the max though? I did an online chat with Dell Support last night and the literature he had available mentioned that CF/SD memory was available in 64MB - 1 or 2 GB. When I pressed for a maximum supported value he relied that they did not recommend more than 2GB. I have a feeling he was going by the literature without really knowing how much it could support. When I asked why they don't recommend more than 2GB, if more would cause problems, he replied that yes more might cause lockups. I've just begun looking for the answer to this question but so far I have not seen any negative reports of using the 4GB or 6GB Hitachi Microdrives. I have seen a warning to not bother with microdrives pulled from other devices, such as Ipods.
