There used to be one years ago called Sea Dogs that I always wanted to try, but never had a good enough PC. Then a while back they started working on a sequel but it got turned into a Pirates of the Caribbean game :(

I do love Sid Meier's Pirates though, so that gets my vote.

I remember anticipating this. Then when it got changed to a different game I promptly forgot about it.

I really would like something like the OP described. A gritty Grand Theft Auto style / Eve online(not mmo though!) Pirate game could be really fun.

Yeah, a well-done, open-world pirate game would really hit the spot.

It would be nice if it had a really good melee component.

Thanks for posting that. I didn't know they had something in the works. I hope they pull it off. The technology is certainly there. Hopefully they have the team that can get it together properly.

Yeah, but if you look at that article which was written back in July 2012, they said it should be available in September. Well, we are already a year past the September they were talking about and I don't see the game. Not looking good....

No I didn't see the date. A shame... maybe they are still able to?

Actually, Caribbean is on Steam and was last updated 20 days ago, it is still being made, although it seems it was dropped and picked back up as it is currently in Alpha

don't know if it's "the best", but there used to be a game called "Age of Sails", latest version was "Age of Sails 2: Privateer's Bounty" that sounds like something you might want to check out.
