What's the general consensus on the pantone huey?

I had one a little over a year ago but sold it. I've been looking at getting something again to calibrate my new 24" LCD and my macbook. Just curious what the consensus was on the Huey.

I just wasn't using it much, I calibrated once then it rarely changed. I now have a new laptop and LCD though, so I could use one again.

When I bought it the first time I didn't do much research, it was cheap so I bought it. Figured I might as well ask around this time

Mine works great on my desktop, but couldn't calibrate my dell laptop to save it's life.

Actually i'm looking more at the Huey Pro now as it has multiple monitor support.

I got the Huey Pro, seems okay so far. I needed the pro since I have a Samsung 24" and a Dell 19".
I don't know how accurate it is yet, but these monitors were waaaayyyy off. No software setup I had could get them to look this good.

People will tell you that it's actually something that you might need to use once or twice per month. However, if you have a good monitor to start with and don't really demand absolute color accuracy at all times, I don't think you would need to calibrate that frequently. Something like once every two months would be ok IMO. But once your monitor starts to get older, like if the backlight starts to dim out, more frequent calibration will be necessary.

I do think they are worth the money though. Say you don't get one and your monitor is out of calibration. You order something like $30 worth of prints and they turn out bad. That's $30 instantly down the drain. You're going to eventually have to get your monitor calibrated then or else none of your prints or web photos are going to look right, ever. Not to mention all that time editing photos that look right to you but not to anyone else.

I use an old Monaco Optix XR. Works very well. It's discontinued and drivers for Vista 64-bit were really hard to find, but I eventually got it working again.

I just picked up a Huey for $40 on CL today. I have a dual monitor setup (iMac and Dell 2209WA). Since, I only edit photos on the Dell monitor that is the monitor that I calibrated.

I print family and friend photos at Costco, so I am loading their color profile into LightRoom now. I guess I'll find out how well it all worked when I pick up my prints on Monday.
