People will tell you that it's actually something that you might need to use once or twice per month. However, if you have a good monitor to start with and don't really demand absolute color accuracy at all times, I don't think you would need to calibrate that frequently. Something like once every two months would be ok IMO. But once your monitor starts to get older, like if the backlight starts to dim out, more frequent calibration will be necessary.
I do think they are worth the money though. Say you don't get one and your monitor is out of calibration. You order something like $30 worth of prints and they turn out bad. That's $30 instantly down the drain. You're going to eventually have to get your monitor calibrated then or else none of your prints or web photos are going to look right, ever. Not to mention all that time editing photos that look right to you but not to anyone else.
I use an old Monaco Optix XR. Works very well. It's discontinued and drivers for Vista 64-bit were really hard to find, but I eventually got it working again.
