What's the future of Barton?

Does anyone know what the proposed roadmap for the Barton cpus? Are they going to just keep it for a couple of months until the Hammer becomes reality, or do they intend to support it longer?

When Barton comes out, it will be priced relative to the XP's of today. The Athlon 64, however, will be quite a bit more expensive. Barton will be kept around because AMD still wants to have a price advantage over P4s. Don't worry about Barton; it will come and it will stay for quite some time.

I was under the impression that the Barton will start out priced similarly to the XP but then will quickly filter down to the low/mid performance desktop market (Duron now) and the Athlon-64 to take over the high performance sector (Athlon XP now). Please correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't seen a roadmap in a while.

I don't know about how fast the price is supposed to drop on the Bartons, but the last time I checked a roadmap, it pretty much had what you described.

AMD said that they plan to have Barton as their top seller throughout all of 2003. That probably means Barton will still be the top seller at least in the beginning of 2004. After that, Hammer should start to overtake Barton in sales (at least according to AMDs estimations). That means that Barton will be AMD's money maker, and will probably be priced just where the top Athlon XPs currently are.

Be ready for the flood of Barton sightings post-Yuletide. Good chance for availability in early April.

Yep, Barton in late Q1 through Q4 to allow Opteron/Hammer to ramp up. Barton will become the flagship for the Athlon XP line and filter down through existing clockspeeds (will appear at higher clockspeeds first), eventually replacing all T-breds, and remaining Pals and T-birds. The current T-bred core will eventually become the basis for the Duron line, which isn't a far cry considering a 1700+ and 1800+ T-breds carry value prices even today.

Edit: Basically means Socket A will be alive and well for a year at least. My guess is that AMD will have some trouble ramping up to Opteron/Hammer (unfortunately for AMD, thats been their MO lately), and will end up having to squeeze every mhz out of Barton. Without knowing the launch specs of the first Hammer chips, the first ones may not command a performance increase proportionate to the increase in costs for a new Hammer system.
