I think one of the dumbest things I remember hearing is this one girl choosing her AOL 5.0 dial up service over UT Austin's residential network, which is on a 10meg network with banded t1 access. The reason why? Because she doesn't want to change e-mails and she knows how to use AOL.

um...when i hit del *.* in our family's computer in the c: drive. Back then, i was tinkering it, then i rebooted, then of course, nothing came up...i was partially laughing and crying. Not cuz of wat my parents was going to do (my parent's don't know how to use computers to this day). Hell, even my dad is a CEO/president of a 300-person business and still doesn't know really how to work it. He had to take one of those fake-executive classes for like $1k to learn...

lol

Here's my story:
Hubby got contacted by the Pres. of the chamber of commerce. Seems the keyboard was messing up. Everytime she'd type things like "e" the shortcut to explorer would open. Tried restarting and a new keyboard. Finally he had to go and pick the pc up. He gets it, plugs it in and it's fine. Turns out she'd been typing with her wrist resting on the windows key the whole time. It was funny though. He emails came in looking like this:

h lp. k y b rd n t w rk ng!

you get the idea.

Some people =)

I know someone who works for a big computer distributer in the UK. When he started off he worked in the help centre, answering phone calls and advising customers on how they should fix their PC. On customer rang up...

Customer:"Hello, The coffee cup holder you bundled with my PC has broken"
Help: "Coffee cup holder sir?"
Customer:"Yea, the one you where you press the button and it slides out"
Help: "No, I believe that's your CD-ROM drive. And I also believe you have just voided you warrantee on it too."

How can people in this day and age be so computer illiterate eh? :D:|

Our lives surround computers, but a significant of people from my parent's generation (they're 40+) don't know how to use computers or even simple terms like double-clicking, right-clicking, Windows key, etc.

I finally taught my parents how to go onine and check some news sites in Chinese that's rather up to date, but they know how to do that by memorizing the steps. For example, if I told them to go to a different web site they'd be completely lost.

That's true..

For people to understand computers you need a solid base knowledge of what is actually going on. Some people are semi-scared of computers because they stereotype them as things where you need to be a dedicated geek to use. I try telling my mum that they are extremely logical things and you only need a minimal knowledge of the actual workings of the computer to get by and use computers successfully. She won't listen though :(

However, a taught a parent of my friend's the basics about using a computer (what's memory and disk space, etc.) and after just 10-15 minutes they immediately become more knowledgeable and more aware of the realistic abilities of a computer.

It's like teaching a kid math and having him asking you about algebra the next day (I wish I could learn math that easily).

Hm... I still laugh at the people who think the mouse is a footpad... or the CD-ROM is a coffee cup holder. Just yesterday I was doing some computer maintenance at school (it's an exclusive elective that allows like 8 students to maintain the school's network, webpage, etc.). I went into the school's Vice-Principal's office and on his desk was a humongous cookie. It was the size of a CD... and my partner was like, "Hey, stick that cookie in the CD-ROM drive!"

ok, maybe that wasn't funny. sorry. :p

This actually happened to me last week.

Me: I need you to click on setup.
Him: I don't see setup.
Me: What screen are you on?
Him: The sign on screen.
Me: You don't see the setup button anywhere?
Him: No. All I see is setup, access numbers and sign on.
Me: Click on setup then.
Him: I don't see setup. All I see is setup, access numbers and sign on.
Me: That's right. Click on set up.
Him: I don't see setup. All I see is setup, access numbers and sign on.
Me: Sir can I place you on hold for a moment?
Him: Ok.
Me: Hold please. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
