what's the function of locking the message?

so how does it work and what's it all about?
sometimes, a thread/message may locked by mod, why they lock it?

We may lock threads for various reasons (needlessly vulgar subject matter, objectionable language, inappropriate links, prolonged verbal attacks, etc.) Basically the lock means that, in our judgment, the thread isn't worth perpetuating, but isn't objectionable enough to require deletion. A locked thread may be read, but users cannot post to it, so it will soon sink to the bottom of the heap.
