Depends on if you set the computer to "n00b" difficulty or not.

And add 1. f4 2. g4 to its opening moves catalogue.

My father who used to play chess proffesionally at his younger days has once won a pro game in 13 moves. The other guy (I think he was a GM or IM) simply put his piece on the wrong square, by accident. He resigned right away, without giving my dad a chance to take the piece.

And btw, to answer your question - you can win without making any moves. The other person can simply resign. You probably meant to ask what's the fastest you can give somebody a check-mate.

Well what is the fastest possible? I mean, say the opponent was trying to lose...

4 moves total

Not the absolute fastest possible, but unlike the 2 moves one, it only requires your opponent to not pay attention, rather than actively lunge toward defeat.

by 4 moves i meant

2 moves per player

i guess total wasn't clear enough?

or is there really one with 1 move per player

The 4-moves checkmate typically refers to the Queen-Bishop one. One "move" usually means both white and black taking their turns.

But I see what you meant now.
