Most readily available is standard 100mb ethernet.

Is there a special porgram that I need to use??
Err...no. Just get a crossover cable as said above and connect the laptop to the desktop. I assume both have NIC's in them.

You'll probably have to set the IP's manually. Make one 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2. Then just share out the folder, and copy it.

Robocopy is a freeware software product that copies stuff really fast. You may want to use that.

How much data? If you're talking in the range of 100+GB, you might want to just yank the HDD from the one box and install it temporarily in the other and just copy files. Otherwise, just go the 100BASE-T Fast Ethernet cat5 route.

Firewire? USB 2.0? Gigabit network?
it's faster than Wireless-G and 100base network

Also for your problem seeing the computers, just run the network setup wizard on both. It's in Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications

Is the ethernet cable a crossover (or null modem)? It has to be for them to recognize each other, otherwise the send wire will be sending to the other send wire and the recieve to the other recieve, they need to be crossed over, hence the name :)

You could even try to make your own, just split open the cat5 casing and cross the green with orange wires and the green/white with orange/white (I think), maybe google to make sure, either that or someone here will correct me if I am wrong (most likely I am :p )

wow... so many vague answers... if you use CAT5/ethernet ensure your piece of cable is a crossover for a direct computer to computer connection or 2 straight through cables if connecting both machines to a hub/router. Connect the cables and then make sure that both machines are setup under TCP/IP to have the same range of IP Addresses. You can prolly look up in google more on how to setup IP Addresses.

If you want... and if it's availabe FireWire/IEEE 1394 (400Mb/s) is faster than 100Mb CAT5 and requires no configuration changes to work.
