whats the fastest way to transfer 4.31GB of data between two computers locally?

so i have an image of a hard drive i want to transfer from the computer im on right now, to a computer 3 feet behind me. they are both on the same network, same router. what would be the fastest way to transfer 4.31GB of data between the two? network? ftp?

is there anyway to break the file into smaller fragments and then connect them once they are in the other computer? that way, i can burn the fragments on cd and the transfer will be through media.

or is it possible to connect the USB ports of both computers?

i dont feel like taking the hard drive out because im too lazy right now.

Turn on file sharing, share a dir, get the file on the other comp?

so that would be the fastest way? im guessing the transfer speeds would probably hover around 700kb/s maybe? i dont know, ill try that.

Well, that will be the fastest. Just leave it on for doing that before you leave for some place or before you sleep. Also, I would reccomend just taking the drive out and copying it, it'll get done in 15 minutes or so at that rate. I can copy about 7 or 8 GB in 20minutes from one hard drive to another for comparison, thats even with one of the drives I backup onto being a 5400rpm drive. If you have both 7200RPM drives, then it might even be 10 minutes for you if you move the drive.

I did 5.5 gig last night over my local 100 megabit network, it took mebbe 15 minutes to transfer from one pc to the other.

In the time it took you to post this and wait for replies you could've transfered it already over the network.

It'll run about as fast as ur slowest hd can read/write data, in other words as fast as possible over 100mbs lan.

ftp has less overhead than windows file sharing does.

ftp over gigabit ethernet is my choice

Of course the fastest way for most folks around here is:
Shutdown computers, take drive of of one, move to other, copy files, shutdown, replace drive.

Yes, you can create RAR volumes of CD size, burn them and recombine the file on the other computer. That's pretty quick and easy too.

FTP is faster then windows filesharing, but it would be much faster to set up filesharing then ftp (2 minutes vs half an hour) so take your pick.

Woah! What kind of ftp server takes 30 minutes to set up?

One you do for the 1st time.

Really. Even just using winblowz filesharing, 4 gigs should only take about 20 minutes at 100 baseT speeds.

i would just do a windows file share... just make sure you map the drive b/c that in my experience for some reason increases the speed dramatically...

When you don't have any prior knowledge of ftp servers and have to research, download, install, and then configure. I could install proftp now (in debian) in 5 minutes. It took me a day the first time.

Serv U takes 2 minutes to setup...wow. And RaidenFTPD takes like 10 Minutes with little to no knowledge. That's by far the most complicated Windows FTP server program
