What do you mean no cable?

Do you have a router? Could you get a crossover cable?

Hooked up to a residence type connection, so no access to the router. No crossover cable. (could get one tommorow when stores open, was curious if theres any other way)

I just did something very similar with an external e-sata drive. 250 GB in about an hour, it was real quick.

I'd chime in and say that notebooks don't have e-sata but I'm probably wrong on that one too :)
That would be great to have...

some NICs don't need a crossover cable so you may want to give it a try. just set up different static IPs and use networking sharing. should be very fast if you have gigE. If you only have 100mbit connection then try an external drive instead ifyou can.

Go get one real quick and then return it when you are done. The fastest way would probably be over the network.

By far, putting both drives in the same computer on a controller and copy them over.
Be they SATA or IDE, they cannot move data faster than across the controller itself.
I do this all the time with laptop drives, I put them in a desktop.

another vote for an external laptop enclosure with firewire, or USB 2.0. In the end, you'd still get an external HD to play around with.

Magnet. Hold the magnet over one drive and suck up all the data. Then hold the magnet over the other drive and shake it (the magnet, not the drive) to sprinkle the data out into the new drive.

Yeah, shaking the drive could possibly ruin the data too.

Be sure to use neodymium magnets. I hear they have about 1TB of storage capabilities. (Or was it more? I forget!)
