I am building a htpc/little gaming pc for somebody. The case he wants gives me roughly 9 inches to work with.

Now with my htpc I have a 460 palit platinum sonic o/c edition in mine and is only 7.5 inches. It's 800/1600 stock. Is this the fastest card available?

8.5 inches would be even better to be safe.

Gaming is only going to be at 1366x768 and will be using a quad core at 3.7ghz.

Read the first line of op.

I was just mentioning my htpc was similar and at the time of my build the 460 was the fastest I could get for the size and am wondering if any new small pcb's are out

At 8.25 inches the NEW Evga SSC @ 850 core is the fastest and best bang for the buck at $200,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130596

Fast, but probably not the best bang for the buck. The best bang for the buck would be just about any other GTX460, all of which can be overclocked nearly as high.

OP - you'll need to determine whether the HTPC case is wide enough to accommodate top-mounted PCI power plugs like those on some models, or if it's only as wide as the PCI bracket is tall, in which case you'll need to save space for end-mounted PCI power plugs such as those on the reference model and the Cyclone.

I see your point, but anything faster then a 6870 stock and garaunteed @ 850 core for $200 to me is best bang. You could overclock a $180 card but for 20$ I like the garauntee.:)

Most 6850s are 8.5"

Really Skurge, lately I dont think your wearing your glasses.
He said "fastest card avalable".

Please dont say the 6850 will overclock to 1000 core because its still not faster or garaunteed. :)

I just thought that 460 was too expensive.

Galaxy GTX 470 is supposed to be 9 inches exactly:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/product-guide/view/32909/review/32910/page:2

But a non-reference, factory overclocked GTX460 is probably your best bet (not a good idea to overclock it yourself when building a rig for someone else). I have the Gainward GTX460, it's only about 7 inches. But there are so many models under 9 inches. The lower power draw of the GPU means it's easier to design a smaller PCB.

Hey I didn't know that about the gtx470, thanks.

And yes ,when you build for someone else, let them do the overclocking.
Very good point.

One thing about the Galaxy card is that it appears to have the power connectors at the front edge of the card which could cause problems. I'd play it safe and just get a GTX460, especially for 1366x768 gaming.

I have the old 1370 model of this card and I can't say enough good things about it. Runs cool, clocks to 850 core, idles at 37, no fan noise at 30%, 8.25" PCB. I was a complete AMD whore until I got that card - the 460 really made me appreciate the refreshed Fermi GPU.
