What's the fastest S939 X2 we'll see?

I haven't heard any rumblings about plans to introduce faster X2 chips on S939. Have you? It definitely seems as though the headroom is there for AMD to introduce a 5000+ or above, but will they? I've heard AMD plans to introduce cheaper X2s on S939 sometime next year, but it's my ultimate goal to own the fastest X2 chip ever made for S939. Is the 4800+ the best we can hope for until Socket M2 arrives?

Depends when M2 arrives. If it doesn't come until the late fall or winter there probably will be a faster S939 X2.

M2 is a good move because lately DDR2 has become quite competitive in performance, and Dual core needs the bandwidth
However it would be much better if they jump straightly to DDR3 instead

They won't. I heard an AMD engineer utter the words "we are moving to DDR2" while we were in the same room.

I see that they are hunger for bandwidth and can't wait a year :p
Perhaps the performance advantage very is big
Hope the lower latency won't matter much

I would assume 2.6 or 2.8ghz considering there are SanDiego cores based on those clock speeds..

I'd also like to find out about this, but I think you're right that the X2 4800+ will be the fastest CPU available for Socket 939.

if yeilds of 4800 is VERY good and faster could be binned I think we would see faster
It's too early to tell
if yeilds are poor= expensive then...

I think a second memory controller would help the most
integrated L3 or L2 smart cache would also help
faster interprocesssor communication than crossbar (which is MUCH faster than Intels FSB hack BTW)
of course two of these solutions take more die space
an integrated L2 would not but would be special purpose chip vs the general way things are done now where the same basic design works for uniprocessor to multiway SMP with no basic changes- excellent foresight and execution AMD
the second memory controller would require more pins but also could be general X1-X2-X8 solution
The greater latency of DDR2 will but more stress/ dependence on the cache start thinking of 1meg each cpu... maybe more
4 x 64 bit memory channels could help with multitasking- video cards already do this

I dont think so....I believe there will be at least 2 more flavors of the X2.....5000+ which will be 2.6ghz with 512kb cache per core and a 5200+ 2.6ghz 1mb per core....I sauy this cause M2 is rumored not to arrive until 1Q of 06 and 6 months is a long time and since we knew about the X2s since april it would be 8 months with no new chips...I doubt it.....

DDR2 is going to take new boards and a handful of them before AMD will launch new chips....

I agree on second memory controller...1 per cpu and then like the opetron setups have dual channel banks per each cpu (core in this case)...will take potentiall more dimm space requiring larger form factor...

What do you have for idea for faster inetrcpu communications./..I think AMDs crossbar is abut the best...Where do want them to communicate at when it comes to shring cache and system request???

I think they may need to think of 1.5-2mb of cache per core

Excellent observations, Duvie...I think you may be right on the money.

A 5000+ @ 2.6Ghz w/512k and a 5200+ @ 2.6Ghz w/1MB

oooh...that would be sweet. It would also probably be $1200 though. :D

Definitely, and because the market for such a high end chip would be small, the prices wouldn't drop like they will on the 4400+ which is gearing to become the most popular X2 processor.

normally what would happen is the 4800 and 4600+'s would drop the most to make room for the 500 and 5200 to come in at their price points....4400-4200 will move down but not nearly as much....expect them at that point ot be high 300's to low 400's....4800 and 4600 could drop 200 a piece....common pricing practice for years now...

I think a new X2 will come out when a faster Intel CPU (yonah?) will be released...

Yonah is mobile...they will have to wait for a desktop model...I however think they shouldn't make the socket change until they are ready to go 65nm and save us all a lot of compatability issues...

Yea, from what I have read Yonah is the pre-curosor to whitefield and conroe. "Dothan" wont be going to desktop, officially atleast, until LGA775 dies with Presler in late '06.

In addition linkgoron you are correct. Most likely Socket M2 (940) and 1207 will be out just before Yonah replaces current Sonoma.
