What's the fastest processor I can use in my Asus A7V?

I searched, but if someone already asked this, I missed it. So I apologize in advance if I did.

Thinking about upgrading my processor to an XP series chip, just to get rid of some of my heat issues. The 1600+ is cheap enough now, so I'd like to use that if possible. Can I do this on the a7v provided I have the most current bios?

Sorry, but the A7V does not support any Athlon XP processors. They do apparently support up to 1.33GHz. Thunderbirds and 1.3GHz. Durons though.

Well crap 🙁. I kind of gathered that from some of the other stuff I read, I was hoping maybe I'd get lucky.

I thought you might be interseted in my recent A7V upgrade......

I have an A7V rev 1.02 which was running my 800MHz T Bird until recently

It nows runs an unlocked Athlon XP 1600+ at 1375MHz. FSB at 110 and stable (tried for 112 to get the 1400MHZ but no good) the multiplier is at 12.5

all in all a pretty sweet and cheap (60GBP) upgrade and I am very happy with it.

I was on 1008 BIOS but now I run 1011. It identifies it as an Athlon XP 2000+ which I figure is based on the multiplier.

Benchmarks are pretty good too and approx 70% faster than my 800MHz T Bird.


so go for it and get a cheap upgrade in!!

I'll have to try that, the xp 1600's are super cheap at newegg now. Thanks for the help, I had all but given up on replacing the tbird 🙂
 
you can run any socket A processor on the shelvs right now
the kt133 chipset just won't support a 133fsb
make sure you got the latest bios then yur set
the asus a7v can optionally support 13 and 14 fsb's but only after reading the cpuid on the cpu and varifying that it is in fact a 1.3 or a 1.4 chip
you'll hafta look into that

Thanks Jorpson, I too have the same board and flashed the BIOS to 1011 to get an XP chip. I ordered a AIOG 1600 XP online since there are claims out there that it overclocks the best for it's series. I should get the chip this week, I'll post what I get. I've been running an original 1gig T-bird in this at close to 1.1 and at 141 FSB. I hope to be able to push close to 160 FSB with the 1600. Never have had any heat problems.

Search around for some guides, there should be plenty of them out there. It involves making physical modifications to the CPU itself to bridge some connections together.
