Sounds like you care about power AND heat and probably noise too. In which case the GT240 is probably the best compromise right now. Maybe the GT430, but I have not seen reviews on it yet. There are "green" versions of the GTX9800/9600 but those take power plugs I think, e.g., http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125098

The 550 Mhz lower power version of the 9800 GT doesn't require a six pin connector and would be slightly faster than a GT 240.

Basically the GT 240. It's not particularly worth it to get a green version of a 9800GT. They do perform slower than a regular 9800GT. Also the difference between a GT 240-GDDR5 and 9800GT isn't that big anyway.

If you have the GDDR3 version then it may be worth the upgrade. Or if you have something like a GT 220, since you don't seem confident you know what you have, then the upgrade would be substantial. You need to find out this info. But if you have the GDDR5 version of the GT 240 then you should probably just wait until the next gen comes out.

Yea I think the GT240 is the highest new/current card that doe snto have a power pigtail.

I have a GDDR5 version in my main computer and my HTPC. Skip the GDDR3 version

Honestly, the GTS450 uses very little power and it doesn't run too hot at all, that I would rather get that if I were planning on gaming on my HTPC. Most decent power supplies would be able to handle that by just putting in a molex to PCIE power adapter cable. Unless you have a really cramped case the GTS450 will run quite cool.

While the fastest card without an external power supply is actually an ATI card (HD 5670), you already own the fastest nVidia card without an external power supply.

nVidia is releasing a new low-end Fermi in the next couple weeks that may be faster though.

Not much better at this point in time; wait 2-3 months and that might change.

Do you need an Nv card for cuda or some other nV specific features, cause you cant get a faster card than your GT240. The 5670 is a lot faster than that and it doesn't need extra power and uses a little less power than your GT240.
