Abit does not have a PX5 board listed?

What chipset does it use, VIA, Intel, SiS??

EDIT: Just found out it has a 430TX Chipset. Do not put in more than 64mg of RAM and 233mhz is the fastest Mhz it will run. You might be able to run a Cyrix M2 300 chip. It runs at 233mhz but is supossed to have some features that the 233mhz P1 chip did not have.

No K6-2 though. Time to upgrade

"Do not put in more than 64mg of RAM "

Why? The board can take 256 megs. The board may only cache 64mgs but so what? The performance penalty is small using a 9x based OS. I use a 430TX board with 128mgs and it works fine with win98.

the newest BIOS I could find was dated 12-28-1999.

For faster cpus there is PowerLeap's adapter to run a k6-3 400. It's $100 US, but includes the K6-3 400 cpu.

Whether it's worth the effort is up to DJMiX. Personally I would leave it as is and use it for testing and networking and such. Or maybe as a system for a younger child to use to learn about computers with.

I'm not 100% on the PX5, but I had an Abit TX mobo (can't recall model) which was OK with AMD k6-2 CPU's. I think I was running it at 75x4.5=375MHz

And I never noticed a performance hit on my old Shuttle Hot 569 TX with over 64MB ram.

I'm not sure if the upgrade is worth it, with Giga-cpu's so cheap these days.

If you get the latest BIOS and the voltage is supported on the board, it probably can take a K6-2, and if it can't, it shouldn't damage it.
BTW, I'll have to keep that caching thing in mind - I have always made sure to stay within the caching limits but if it doesn't really matter...

I agree, you can get a 1Ghz Duron and a NEW board for around $100.

If you don't play the most cutting edge games, then look at a Board that has the KM266. It has on-board sound, video, and a ethernet card.

After researching this further I have found that with the newest BIOS this board still can't supply the proper core voltage of 2.2, only 2.5. The board can be modded to allow the proper voltage but why bother?

As others have said, the new stuff is not that expensive.

Besides the board still has uses. Donate it to a charity that refurbishes old pcs. Use it like I mentioned above. Put it up for sale.

The choice is yours.

k6-2 400 will work if you can find one. it can be run using 2x multiplier and it will think its 6x = 400mhz 66.6fsb. 2.5 volts wont hurt it ether. it's be done alot.

personally it's not worth it. it's still gonna be a slug.
