right now i have a mobo w/ sis 735 chipset, 512 ddr2100 ram, and a amd xp1600+. whats the fastest cpu i can get without getting a newb mobo? would you gets recommend that or new ram, mobo, and cpu?
 
i recommend new stuff sense it pretty cheap these days:
mobo: 8rda+ $85
CPU: 1700+ (tredB) $50
memory: 512 GeIL pc3200 $71

all this prices are from newegg, if you have any monaey to spare, get better ram. but this setup should take you to 2.2Ghz and it only costs a little more than $200
 
Go to your mobo manufacturer's website, find your board, and see what the board will support up to, and that's how far you can go without getting a new board (chances are you won't be able to get a 333MHz or 400MHz FSB CPU).
