What's the fastest CPU for an AM3+ socket?

Is it Thuban or Bulldozer, etc... Looking for absolute fastest and also option for best bang for the buck.

Can anyone advise?

Machine will be used for "anything" but probably 80% flight simulation and 20% video/movie editing with Sony Vegas, etc...

It's only going to be paired with a GT240 but flight simulations that I'm planning to run on this machine are CPU and not video bound anyway...

do you already have the board? if not I'd go with an i5 3570(k), if it's a drop in upgrade go with what AtenRa said, the fx8320

I already have the board... Because of this and because it's just a first PC for my kids that will be used for 5 year old software, I'm thinking BEST BANG FOR BUCK... I saw a few deals for a 1045 and 1090 for under $100 and I'm thinking that's what I'll probaby use to finish out the rig... Unless I get some smoking deal on an 8320 or something in which case, I'll probably update the video card from the GT 240 to something substantial down the road...

Does this sound liek a decent strategy?

In that case, look at the fx-6300 or fx-4300, it's getting kind of hard to find the hex core phenoms.

FX8320 hands down. It clocks to ~the same leves as 8350 and is better in every way than 1100T(especially games if that means anything to you).

For those needs, FX-6300. If video editing was more important than just 20% important, FX-8350 would make sense. If you want to spend more, get a higher end cooler for the FX-6300 and OC it properly

Shouldn't the cooler in my rig signature work well for an 8320 or a 1090T? If I can score an 8320 for $150 I'll probably get that. I may just get a 1090 for ~$90 though... $50 isn't much but must draw the line somewhere...

For $22.00 more than the FX6300 i would get the 8320

The price compression for AMD's chips is just amazing. Between a quad, a hex, and an octo core processor the price itself might span $40-$50 top to bottom.

Makes it very hard to make the argument "I can justify spending money for an FX-6300 but I cannot justify spending an extra $20 to get the 8320".

The one that is arguably a needless bump in the budget is the purchase of an 8350 over that of an 8320. Whether you OC or not, the delta between those two is going to be rather negligible.

I could be wrong but i dont believe the ThermalRight XP-90 can be mounted on the AM3+ Socket.

If you dont want to spent more than $150 get the FX6300, better than the Thuban but 1090T at $90 is the best Bang for the buck as of now. You just miss AVX and AES etc and the smaller TDP of the FX6300.

Actually if you dont OC the FX8350 is the clear better choice( 4GHz vs 3.5GHz). But i will agree that from 6300 to 8320 to 8350 the price difference is small.

Did you type that correctly? 1090T for under $100? I assume that's used. I'd say that's a pretty good bang for the buck.

Edit - Looks like someone else already mentioned that.

There is a thread at over clock.net with a chart showing clocks and a few settings that users were at. Just a quick glance seems to show the 8350,s and 8320,s doing about the same speeds at similar voltages.

One problem with that chart is how stable everyone was at those speeds is unknown. Personally I usually don't add my results to those charts, I tend to make up for a lack of overclocking finesse with the use of brute force (voltage).
