what's the fastest card an xp1700+ can run?

I`m running a Sapphire 9700NP with my XP 1700+ which is a decent matchup, guess you should look at something that has similar performance to a 9700NP.

so you think an xp1700+ with 1gb of pc2100 mem and a card you suggested should do me well with doom3?

I played it with only 512mb of ram(PC2100) at 800x600 with no AA,was ok for me .

well it'll "run" a 6800Ultra . . . . 😛

What is your BUDGET?

it also depends on (1) What games you play, (2 ) at what resolution you play at and what the (3) REST of your system is like . . . .

it also depends if you plan on o/c'ing your CPU and/of when you plan to upgrade.

Now for a quick answer . . . . a 9700p/9800p is really good bang-for-buck as well as the 6600GT - DEPENDING on PRICE (check Hot Deals) 😉

Try OCing the 1700. I had a 1700 and a some PC2100 oced to 192 x 12.5 = 2400MHz no problem... that should be able to handle a 6800 GT ok.

Not if that chip is Palomino. Those were locked w/ bridge cuts and were extremely poor overclockers even if you reconnected the bridges. Or it could be Tbred A which also sucked at overclocking.

Now if it's Tbred B, now you're talking. 🙂

i don't have a very impressive board for OC'ing...besides, i leave this thing on 24/7 in my room. i don't want to hear a bunch of fans whizzing away all night. that said, i've got a ECS K7S5A mobo. can't tell you anymore about the athlon other than it's an xp1700+. my currnet in frankenstein idea is to strip my current rig and buy the following:

Epox-8KDA3J NForce3 250
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
Arctic-Cooling Freezer 64
GeForce 6600GT

i'll use the pc2100 mem from the current rig as well as the hd's, audigy 2zs, and so forth. the total upgrade will run about $425. doesn't seem too bad. i know...i've read all the "dude....you've got to hold out for the NForce4...better upgrades for the future", etc., but if my last few computers were any indication, i wait too long for an incremental upgrade to be worth anything.

2100 ram will slow you down a lot. I had a crappy ECS motherboard (don't ask) that would only run my 2500 at 1700 with the ram at 333; games were choppy, and it wasn't the video card. With a new mobo, things cleared right up with ram at 400. Go for a new motherboard; the cheap Shuttle Nforce2 U400 is excellent. I built a box for my roomie with one of those and a mobile, with a 6800, and it is flying.

i have a 1700+ which i think is an a....i dont recall, but i have it at 2067mhz now, and with the epox i used to have had it even higher, for some reason this asus wont let me get quite as fast, but the few mhz isnt noticable. i use a 980 pro on this, going to upgrade to a 6600gt agp and get another 512mb ram soon and i should be set for a while

Go for the 9800 Pro. There seems to be a bunch of bad 9700 Pro's...do a search...NEVER buy a 9700 Pro used...

You already picked your own videocard - good choice for NOW and for your next system . . . . your current xp1700+ will do fine with it
