I'm thinking about buying a Slot 1 mobo, with support for 100Mhz FSB. Is the 850Mhz P3 the fastest proc I can stick in this think? Could a Celeron 1Ghz be a better option using a Slotket?

I would get a socket 370 mobo, but I'm stuck w/ an AT case. The fastest board/proc combo I've seen is a 440BX board w/ an 850Mhz Slot 1 P3. I'm limited to a 100Mhz FSB. Anyone know the fastest proc I can drop in this thing?

depends on the MB, but you can possibly get celeron 1.2 to work, if not a p3 1 ghz with 100 mhz bus.

Hard to say until you get the MB.

Is it really that hard for you to just buy a new case. You can find some nice ones for 50 bucks at newegg.com

A Slot 1 doesn't support the new Celerons, right? I've seen adapters from Powerleap that work, sometimes. Are these what you are referring to? Is there a PIII 1Ghz with a 100Mhz FSB?

Yes, there are...I'm running one. These chips were made for Intel motherboard-based server systems.

If you can find them, they're still pricey at around ~$210 or so.

I got it b/c of the fact that it's a 1Gig. and that I wanted to still use my Abit BF-6 after my Celery 566->850.

Intel P3 Specs

I have SL4KL P3-1000 Mhz Boxed Proc.

Great chips.

Depending on what you want to do, you can probably get better performance from an Amd-based system.

that would be a 1.1GHz cpu which only comes in fcpga factor!

Dont let that AT case limit your CPU/mobo choice. You should really upgrade to an ATX case. I bought a cheapie at a show a few weeks ago for a PC I built for a neighbor for $30. It even has front USB ports. Is there a reason you have to keep that case?

No, I guess there isn't a real reason that I can't upgrade my case. I don't need a super fast machine, this one would be mostly a server/workstation type setup. If I were to upgrade to an ATX case, I would need new RAM, case, and power supply. If I just upgrade the mobo, I can still use my old power supply, and RAM that I have lying around. Plus, the case I have is a fairly nice one, with lots of expansion slots. A similiar ATX case of decent quality would be $50-$100, plus the cost of the power supply.

The mobo in question is a Tyan Tsunami S1830. I do need the ISA slots on it, which is one reason not to upgrade to a ATX board.

What kind of ram do you have that wont work in an ATX case? BTW, that case I bought for $30 at a show had a 300 watt PS.

IMHO its time to ditch that case. For the same $$$ you could buy a really cheap duron a decent duron mobo + an average ATX case.

Cheap cases with a good shipping rate Chieftec Chenming and Enermax all have very good cases in the $50-$60 range. Add a 1 Ghz Duron for a mere $50 and a cheap Duron capable motherboard. A nice one will run you at most $80. You basically can buy a Duron + mobo for the cost of a P3 850 forgetting about the motherboard.

Besides that a Duron would be faster than a P3 850.

<< I haven't seen many slot1 AT mobo's. I was under the impression that most PIII mobo's were ATX. >>

As was I. There are a few P2/3 motherboards out there that are non ATX. Heck I've seen most of them in crappy IBM PCs.
