i've noticed some motherboards have the connector and some PSU having the wire. i think i read that its for core 2 duo cpus requiring the extra power but i checked out some core 2 duo compatible motherboards and they don't have the 8 pin connector on the mobo while others do.

It provides a lower-resistance current path for the 12 V rail. It was originally intended for server motherboards that drew a great deal of power for the processors, and needed consistent power. It's gradually migrating into the consumer space, even though newer processors are often using less power.

Migrated from the server world, much like 24-pin PSU connectors. :D

Mainly for dual Xeon server mobos. Most dual or quad core CPUs use less power than one Xeon.
