I've been trying to connect these 2 machines for weeks but I can't seem to get them to see each other. Here's a rundown of my setup.

(2) Win 98se machines
1st PC - 2 nic cards, one going to a dlink hub the other is connected to a 3com cable modem
2nd PC - 1 nic card connected to the dlink hub

Now here is where my problem exists, for some odd reason on both PC's I can't always see my workgroup when I explore under network neighborhood. I don't know what makes it appear and reappear the way it does. Its driving literally insane.

anyone have some suggestions

Welcome to networking and Win9x. :) Make sure the only protocol available is TCP/IP.

i assume they ARE all on the same workgroup right?

also, for nic#2 in main machine and nic in second box that's routing, are they both on the same subnet?

Do I need to have file and printer sharing enabled to have peer to peer networking and shared internet connections

also if i have file and printer sharing enabled can other people see or delete the files on my PC?

I'm running zone alarm, will that stop all outside network intrusion

in network properties, you go into "tcp/ip for your ethernet adapter" (same place where you specify an IP)...right below IP is subnet mask. you should make sure they're both on 255.255.255.0

yep, you need file and printer sharing! did you not have that? cause that's really important.

if you have that enabled only through your second nic and your secondary computer, then your fine. just make sure it's not enabled on your extranet (i.e. your nic that connects to the cable modem)

are you using Internet connection sharing? i assume so

nic #2 in main machine should have IP 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0

nic in second machine should have IP 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 196.168.0.1

then make sure ICS is enabled on nic #1 i in main machine (i.e. IP forwarding) and you should be set.

Go into My Computer
Be sure to RIGHT click on all the drives and choose "Sharing" and enable that also ;)

I must have some possesed pc's because nothing is working

when i go into the network neighborhood on either pc and try to browse the entire network i get the error "Unable to browse the network"

this is what happened last time i tried to connect these machines, for some reason i can never browse the network

make SURE you have your config set to "windows logon" instead of "client for microsoft networks"...because if it on boot up you see a screen saying "enter logon info" or whatever and you escape from it then you will NOT be able to browse the network

and speaking of "client for microsoft networks" is it installed??

Yeah try going to start>run>\\nameofcomputer and see if that works. Sometimes network neighborhood is just messed up. Also try logging off and logging on after you boot up.
