I just got a creative zen vision and I wanna put some movies on it. What's the easiest and quickest way to turn a dvd movie into a 320x240 mpeg file (the creative plays mpeg 1, 2, and 4 but not avi)?

Also, anyone know about how much space you can condense a typical 2 hour movie down to? I know with dvd shrink I have compressed movies down to about 2 gig's but that's still at full res. The creative zen only has a 320x240 screen so any more than that is a waste for what I need.

I use DVD-To-MPEG, v. 2.2. I have converted several movies and loaded them into my Creative Zen Vision for trips.

MPEG

It is pretty easy to use.

NO!

The absolute simplest (and requiring no re-encoding/modification of the video file) way of getting the MPEG out of a DVD is by loading that VIDEO_TS file in TMPGEnc DVD Author, and select the "Copy data to HD" option at the next screen. It's done in a couple of minutes!

That's because it doesn't actually do anything but copy the data for you since DVDs are already MPEG2. Since he needs the video resized he's going to have to transcode the thing anyway.

DVD2SVCD is a good choice, and freeware. Actually I've never converted below 352x240 with it (i use the VCD template) but I'm pretty sure it's not a problem to use 320x240. You can disabled the "make image" option since you won't be doing any burning. The result is a "vanilla" mpeg 1 file (or mpeg 2 if you want)

Mpeg 4 can be wrapped in the avi container, so it seems odd to me that this device can't play avi. It needs the .mp4 extension perhaps? If so I think a program called Super can convert to that (freeware) but I've never used it

Rip it in IFO mode with DVD Decrypter.
In DVD Decrypter, go to Tools -> Settings. IFO Mode tab. Set File Splitting to None. Check the other options underneath that to get rid of the prohibited user operations, and other protections.
Click OK.
Back at the main window, select Mode -> IFO. Then select the main movie's PGC from the list.

That'll rip the entire movie to a single file.

Then see if you can load it up with ReMPEG
