Okay, I'll get this out of the way... I'm a total newbie, and don't really know what I'm doing. :)

I want to know what kind of Heat Sink for a mid-range Athlon XP would be easiest to install. By which I mean, the least likely to result in accidental breakage of the CPU. Can anyone offer advice on this?

Thanks.

you have to be really stupid, no offense to anyone who has done it, to break a cpu. dont worry, you wont break it. what is the model of the chip?

Cool, I guess I'm just nervous for no reason then.

At this point I haven't bought anything yet, I'm just trying to plan ahead so I know what to expect. The chip will be an Athlon XP 1600+ or 1700+, depending on the prices the day I go to buy it.

i've heard quite a few people state how they've chipped the core or cracked it installing their HSF
if you want some extra protection, buy a shim - they make it safer (as far as i know) to install the HSF

if you buy a combo or a barebones, the HSF usually comes installed (stock HSF)
if you plan to overclock, you'll want to get a better HSF and use arctic silver rather then the thermo paste that comes on stock HSF

If you can, install the HS with two people. Have one person install the clip or screws, while the other person makes sure the core doesn't get cracked. Just make sure there is a good connection between the core and bottom of the HS.

I second the Cooler Master HHC-001. I've taken mine off about 30-40 time in the past two weeks and it only take about 1 sec to take it off and 3 secs to put it back on. Plus, its a very good heatsink at that.

I've found that Coolermaster heatsinks are the easiest to install. Slip one side of it onto the socket prongs, then just push down on the clip on the other side and it'll go right on. Really easy in comparison to other heatsinks.
