So first we need to take the letters of their names and convert to numbers:
If A=1, b=2, c=3 ...
then
Hawaii = 8+1+23+1+9+9 = 51
Japan = 10+1+16+1+14 = 42

Hawaii - Japan = 52-41 = 9

The answer is 9!

The answer is 9!

the only real word i could come up with this number using any combo (more than 1) of letters that adds up to 9 is:

ACE = 1+3+5

So the difference between hawaii and japan is an ace.
