whats the diffs between Laser and optical mouse?

<----Peripherals?

Also, lasers are far more focused than a standard optical beam, and therefore more accurate.

laser uses less battery it claims. I have a Microsoft wireless laser 5000. It's a piece of crap. The range is 3 feet.

Laser mice use a laser as the light source, others use an LED. Laser light allows greater precision and operation on surfaces like glass, but costs more to implement.

plus it supposedly uses less electricity meaning better better life.

Only thing I've noticed personally is that my laser works on several surfaces where I used to have to use a mouse pad for my old optical.

supposedly better contrast or something for the sensor.

if i totally cover the sensor and rub my thumb over the laser hole it still works smooth. my led ones just don't work. just one difference is all

Unless your mouse has difficulty tracking the surface you use, optical is superior. The MX518 > G5 performance wise as long as you have a mousepad.

if optical is so good then why are there so many mice still with a ball?

wow, that argument is a total failure

Newegg's list of mice by tracking method

Ball: 10
Laser: 76
Optical: 281
TrackBall: 11

I guess 10 is more than 76 or 281? Man I really failed kindergarten if that is true.

According to that trend the ball is either holding on to life by the fingernails or its a newer and superior technology than laser that is just catching on...maybe even you can solve which of those two options it is.

As to actually answering Solodays question, "if laser is better then why are there still so many mouse equip w/ opctical?" Well My answer would be the fact that laser technology for mice is still relatively new, and the advantages they promised over optical weren't all there with the first generation of laser mice, at least not without driver and firmware development and even that couldn't save all the downfalls of current laser mice and their tracking problems at a high speeds (skipping, positive/negative acceleration).

Simply put, optical is still king because it is tried and true and mature where most of the kinks have been ironed out over the years to the point where the best optical mice utterly wipe the floor with laser mice when it comes to sheer overall performance when given a decent tracking surface.

But with time I think it is inevitable for laser's own kinks to be ironed out to the point where the laser mice are clearly superior (or at least even) in just about every aspect that optical might be better at today.

well as said all optical mice use the same pickups, the only difference is some mice use led's to light up the mousing surface and others use laser pointers. if you take an led and shine it on a surface you will notice it lights up differently when you shine a laser dot on that same spot. certainly the laser dot brightens up a broader spectrum of red and maybe thats why they work better on some surfaces as compared to LEDs.

I like my optical better too. I tried Logitech laser mouse and it's too jumpy and too fast, you don't even know where the pointer is.
