Well, I am going to guess here that you have a lens marked with 3mm and one with 8mm. What you would then have is the focal length of the lens. That is, the distance from the lens that the image comes to focus. A lens with a shorter focal length has a wider field of view. A longer lens gives a bigger image, but a smaller area of view.
