As I understand it, hits are every request made to the server, be it for media, text, html, etc.. Say you have a page with 6 images and a flash animation, and three people visit this page. Their computers "hit" the server consecutively 6 times for images, once for the html itself, and once for the Flash animation, resulting in a total of 24 hits for all three visitors. Visits are just a visit to your site, regardless of how many requests made to the server for media. Unique visits are counted per IP address.
