wanna get a cheap video card... either geforce2mx or v4 4500...

i know that the v4 4500 supports fsaa and that the geforce2mx has hardware t&l... but what exactly does that mean?

which one will make my games look better?

it depends on your budget and what games you primarily play. the best all around 3d gaming card at this point is radeon ddr 32megger tho, IMO. their is a rumor sayin ati will discontinue them, so you might wanna get them now. they go for 150 after 50 rebate.

if your choices are limited within those two, then i say go with the mx and overclock the hell out of it. just my 2 cents

There isn't even a choise here in my opinion, unless you own a Super7 motherboard with barely functional AGP. GeForce2 MX blows Voodoo4 4500 out of the water. V4 4500 is practically as fast as two generations old Voodoo3 3000 whereas GF2MX is within reasonable margin of GeForce DDR which is still considered as a high-end gaming card.

Out of these two, GeForce2 MX will certainly make your games look better since you can run in higher resolutons, unless you have a lot of old Glide-only titles you'd like to play. GF2MX is faster in fullscene anti-aliasing than Voodoo4 4500 too, albeit Voodoo4's FSAA has slightly better application-compatibility.

Voodoo4 4500 is a fine card, but just far too slow for it's price. See for yourself (Anand's review).

ATI Radeon SDR is just as good value as GeForce2 MX IMO; it's slightly more expensive but also faster in high resolutions and it's 3D-features and DVD playback quality are outclassed by no other graphics card out today.

hmm... ok so it looks like v4 4500 is out of the question... that's good cuz it's more expensive than the geforce2 mx. :)

i'll have to look in to the radeon 32mb ddr then...

thanks for your replies. :)

Yes, if it was a choice between the 4500 and the MX, I'd probably choose the MX (although I'd be wary of the poor 2d quality most models tend to exhibit). However, if you chucked the 32meg Radeon DDR in there - then I'd definitely pick that one. :)

but now, which geforce2mx card should i get?
don't need one with video out or anything.. just a plain old card using geforce2 mx chipset...

i was thinking of the creative labs one... annihilator2mx... anyone heard anything about this one?

I don't know what reviews you get your info from, but ALL of the major sites that review hardware show the best card to be GeForce2 GTS in EVERY case. If you are going to spend $150, then why settle for the runner up card, when you can get the winner for the same price, and not have to wait 3 months for a rebate! I find it truely unbelievable how so many people can say the ATI card is best when EVERY review says otherwise. What is up with that?

Best choice of the 2 given is easily the GeForce2 MX over the 3dfx card.
If the next level of performance is wanted, then the GeForce2 GTS for $150
is the next logical choice. If you need to ask where, then you should spend
more time on research before buying, as it's posted all over.

Jpprod is correct. The MX is faster, has more features and is more future proof than the V4. The V4 is grouped with hardware two generations older than it, and is essentially what the V3 should have been.

The V4 has only just come out and it already has problems running modern games like Quake 3 and UT. It's especially surprising to see it do so poorly in UT given the Unreal engine is based around Glide and tends to favour the Voodoos.

Pay no attention to FSAA either. Although 3dfx's FSAA may be subjectively slightly beter than the competetion, the V4 doesn't have enough fillrate to play most modern games without using FSAA, much less if you use it. Also the GF2 MX has FSAA as well, and not just 2x like the V4 is limited to.

For the price and the features/performance the V4 is a total rip-off. The only time I would consider one is if I had a non-AGP motherboard or a motherboard with severe AGP issues. And even then I would have to be heavily into Glide games.

one could consider V4 4500 as a TNT2Ultra with FSAA (which is too slow on it anyway) they are about the same speed

also the V4 is hugely overpriced POS in m opinion

My 2 cents:

Voodoo 4500: too little too late.

GF2MX: Goal!

Get a MX, between the above two choices. The Creative is nice. But on other posts here -- the SDR overclocked does outdo the Creative. Brand: any brand will do. But if you want a bit performance (for a bit more money) -- get a 3D Phophet II MX. It's SDRAM is rated at 183MHz vs. all other comparable cards. I could over clock my memory easily to 210 - 215MHz.

You might want to consider a Radeon 32 DDR, too. Especially if you plan to run DVDs or play games at higher than 1024x768.

I have the Hercules GeForce 2 MX, which is supposed to be one of the best. fastest memory and highest clock speed, as long as you get the full version, not OEM.

hell, iwth the insanely low prices of the GTS cards anymore, you'd be nuts not to spend a few extra $$$ and grab one of them.

my friend hawk, who sells radeons in forsale/trade says he cant get the 32mb ddr from his source, since that guy cant get those anymore, so i figure its discontinued. Probably have to get a radeon sdr now, probably better than a gf2mx.
