What's the difference? HSF for FCPGA or socket-A???

I am thinking about buying a new CPU, but was wondering what the difference was between HSF's which are supposedly designated for Slot-A or FCPGA. Isn't it just a hunk of metal which provides good thermal contact with the CPU? Are they interchangeable?

I'm probably going to go with a slotket and an FCPGA Celeron or P3, since I want to use my old Slot-1 motherboard. What do you recommend as a good value/relatively quiet HSF? I will probably so some overclocking, but nothing too major.

Also, what's the deal with these copper spacer plates. Are they really necessary? I assume they are to prevent crushing the chip?

Sorry for all the questions. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not interchangeable. The position of the core on the PCB isn't the same for Socket A and FC-PGA processors aren't the same, heck, I don't even know if the overall area of the processors are the same. You can try to interchange them, but if the cores crack, don't blame me.

You CAN, however, use heatsinks that are safe for both types on both types.

Make sure your Slot 1 motherboard supports Coppermine processors, or else it won't work.

Yes, they are, but improperly applied, they can crush the chip faster, and/or escalate temperatures severely. If you have a heatsink with a nice, easy clip with a tight fit I would recommend against a shim.

I don't remember much about Slot-1 heatsinks (ah, nostalgia 🙂), but I think the GlobalWin VOS32 was a very nice heatsink.

Thanks for the tips. I'm using an Abit BX6r2. My understanding is I should use a FCPGA HSF and not a slot-1 HSF, since it is an FCPGA chip in the slotket. Does that sound about right? Any tips on FCPGA HSFs?

Yeah... I forgot about that. I kept thinking about the way people had modified their Slot 1 heatsinks to fit on a Slotket.

The Taisol CEK734 FC-PGA will probably do well for you if you don't plan to overclock.
