what's the difference between tivo and dvr?

i'm thinking about getting dvr with timewarner and it costs about $9/month with the box. but what's the difference between that and buying a tivo box?

Tivo is a DVR, but most DVR's are not Tivo.

If you have never had tivo than your cable compaies dvr will be fine.. If you have had tivo it will suck.
