are there any major differences between the two chips? i have decided on what mobo i want but they have it in either kt133a or km133a flavors. they seem to have the same specs so i can't really tell the difference between them. they even look basically the same from the picture. here's the links:

kt133a

km133a

only differences i really see is the little black chip on the km133a that is below the bottom pci card and the couple small chips next to the 3 resistors directly left of the socket. i wanna make sure i get the better of the two boards and not one that is "crippled" compared to the other. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Yes that is the main difference. The km chipset is for low-cost solutions. It is generally found on Micro-ATX mobos w/ fewer tweaking options and less expansion capacity. If you want to play around with all the tweaks that are suggested on Anandtech, you will want the KT chipset. If you just want a low-cost solution that works fine for over 90% of computer users, then the KM should suit fine. Of course, most of us here are in that OTHER 10%...;)
