Comparing the two 40-hour tivo's...

One is $49ar the other is $99.... Any big difference?

One is a standalone TIVO box, the other is a DirecTV Receiver/TIVO box in one. If you have DirecTV get the combo box because they will allow you to record one thing while watching another or record two things at once.

old model, new model. color of the case is different, thats about it.

Hmm, if thats it, $50 more in my pocket sounds good 🙂

you might peruse Hot Deals....I know originally, the rebate form did not list the model # of the cheap one, but they may be honoring it.

Ahh, actually there is a difference.... The newer silver one has native support for drives over 137gb..... 🙂

Anyone know if its hard to upgrade a tivo?

Harder than upgrading a PC but still pretty easy.

2.5 weeks ago Best Buy had Tivo Series 2 for FREE after rebate 🙂

Yah, i almost jumped but didnt... Stupid me 🙁

I did however just see the new silver one for $79 at amazon....

I was amazed that the shelf tag advertised it was FREE after rebate, you don't normally see that. The BB sales guy even said it was free. Went back to BB the next with a friend to buy another, price shot back up to $99 AR.

The tools are linux based, for someone familiar with Linux it's a piece of cake, I think it would be terribly confusing if something went wrong and you hadn't used linux before.

Yes. though the tools have gotten MUCH better. also you can generally find large guides that explain everything you'll need to know. it's just a matter of doing the research and having all the printouts on hand. also, the one tricky part is that the tivo's power supply is unshielded so you have to be a bit more careful poking around in there.

also, you'll probably need to purchase a second bracket for your 2nd drive, which you can only get from a limited number of places (got mine from 9thtee.com I think).

I plan on ordering from WeakNees.com when I upgrade our old ReplayTV 3060, 5040, Tivo 2 and DirecTIVO units.

I've been looking at them, but it seems kinda expensive to let them do it if its something you can do on your own....

$139 for an 80gb drive that sells for $49 at outpost.
