Whats the difference between socket 939 and 754?

Ive been hearing major hype concerning the arrival of socket 939 but what benfits does iot offer in place of socket 754? Also I saw that some of the Athlon 64's are even shipping for soket 940?! whats that about?
Please excuse my noobishness.. hehe

Socket 754 only supports single channel Processors. The 939 supports dual channel processors. The 940 is the server-workstation socket for opteron processors, though early Athlon FX series were released for that socket, but used slower registered memory, so AMD changed to Socket 939 not using Regisrtered dimms anymore.

754 = A64 with 1 meg of L2 (clawhammer) and 512 kb of L2 (newcastle)
940 = opterons AND A64-FX with 1 meg of L2 <-- both require registered mem as carlosd mentioned
939 = A64 with 512 kb L2 AND A64-FX with 1 meg of L2

so trade off is...

you get dual channel with the newer s939 but lose out on 512 kb of L2 from the 754's

i thought that the 939 was not out untill the end of the summer being a daul procesor chip??? i see that it is out now so how many different types of boards are out there that can even handle the task of 2 cores in one chip???

The 754 will also be .09. In fact the first batch of 90nm chips have been socket 754

939 means you get to pay more and are forced to use 2 DIMMS 😛

igblack, socket 939 does NOT mean dual cores, it means dual channel memory addressing

754 means you get to save 200-300 bucks and spend it next time. Face it, by the next time you upgrade, you will want a new mobo. By then the 939 procs will be cheaper, and the 2nd gen 939 motherboards will be out.

Trex how do you figure $200-$300? If you choose 754 or 939 it doesn't mean you get the cheapest 754 CPU and Mobo or the cheapest 939 CPU &amp; MOBO.

You still want to get close to the best that both offer. And by doing that you save at max $50 from 754 instead of 939. And those 90nm and higher frequencies are just around the corner.

I don't know anyone that buys new systems every 6 months. It's at least 3-4 years. By then those, higher clocked 90nm 64s will be nice and cheap and will be placed into your socket 939.

It's going to be several months before we get there, however. And we are talking about very exclusive products - available only to buyers with sufficient money to spend. The message for everyone else is that PCI components will still be available for years to come and the AGP isn't suddenly going to become obsolete.

Is it a wise to upgrade from axp to a64 now?

If nforce4, s939 and pcie 6800 will be out in this year, I think I will wait for them.
If not, I think I will upgrade in a month or so.

Zerion, my advice to you is to wait a month or so. Yes Nforce 4 with PCI-E will come out in a year, at a high cost, thus making you wait even longer for those prices to go down.

Rather wait now for 939 to go down, get that, and the only upgrade you'll need or want, according to your judgment, to make is a CPU change. For the dual-cores. But any 939 CPU now will last you plenty of time. That's what makes AMD great 😉
