From what I know there are no "differences" if you don't plan to mod your PS2. I think some are easier to mod than the other.

i don't plan on modding but i have heard that there has been issues with the original SCPH-30001 so i was mostly wondering if those problems were the same for this SCPH-30001R. and i also want to put in a harddrive when FFXI comes out. does every model have a HDD hookup?

putting in a hard drive isn't modding?

i consider a mod doing somehting that doesn't come from sony or isn't recomended by sony. they are going to put out a harddrive next year when FFXI comes out because thats the only way you can play the game

PS2 are pretty much the same except earlier models, v1 especially, had a poor laser and it can stop reading cd-roms (blue bottom discs), this also happens to other early units. If you are not planning to mod your best bet would be to get a used V7, or buy a brand new V8. All the ones from V1-V7 are pretty much the same except for the laser and motherboard. V8 is the newest one that adds progressive scan, its quiter, and it has a built in IR port for a remote.

V7 has a pretty good laser and it can read DVD-R/DVD+R, haven't tired +RW or -RW yet.

How do you tell what revision a Playstation is anyhow?

The numbers matter if your going to get a mod chip.

The early ones are harder to mod and some of the mods can not be guaranteed to work after a while. Some modders refuse to mod them as they are not as easy and can come lose quite easily.
